The Lord’s Resistance Army and Obama’s plan to stop them

Interesting story today about President Barack Obama’s recent plan to help the deteriorating situation in Congo. The Lord’s Resistance Army is a group based in Uganda that is currently considered to be a terrorist organization by the United States government. The group is at least partially responsible for much of the bloodshed in North Eastern Congo in recent years, and represents a huge stumbling block on the path to stability in the DRC at large.

Obama’s plan is ambitious, and calls for protection of civilians as well as the capture of the LRA’s leader, Joseph Kony. At the end of the day, though, it will take a lot more than the disbanding of one militia group to fix the situation in Congo, even if the group is as prominent as the LRA. Systemic change needs to happen in all areas of society in order to prevent the continuation of the status quo.
