Riots at the University of Kinshasa

Some startling news came across the radar screen yesterday: a protest at the University of Kinshasa turned violent, claiming the lives of about 10 people. Congo is no stranger to violence, as you’ll see in previous blog entries, but Kinshasa (where CLI operates) has typically been somewhat safer. Reports claim that the riots, which also resulted in mass looting, began after the death of a UNIKIN student by hanging. This event coincided with continuing complaints by students that the university has not done enough to ensure their safety. The story continues to develop, but CLI has ensured that its students (who are all still in high school) are safe and that the Leadership Development Program has not been affected.
