Earlier this month, it was reported that there had been violence at the University of Kinshasa resulting in several deaths. A recent update indicates that the Congolese government has called for peace and calm and confirms that there had been multiple killings earlier this month.
Perhaps the most startling aspect of this violence is the outrage expressed by students directed at their university administration. It is hard to imagine such measures being taken by American university students in such a fashion (though it has happened in the past) and undoubtedly does not bode well for the safety of young people like CLI’s scholars. CLI can confirm that no individuals associated with the organization have been hurt and wishes for peace and security in the Congo.
